I am writing today to share with you my support for the Corporate Scholarship Tax Credit Program.  As a resident and voter in your district, I want you know that educational options are important to me and my family.

For the past five years, the Scholarship Tax Credit Program has provided hundreds of economically challenged students the opportunity to pursue academic success at a school of their choice.  Parents know what school setting works best for their children, and should be empowered to make that decision.  For every student, there is a classroom environment that is right for them.  However, for far too many Rhode Island students, options are limited or non-existent, due to economic constraints.

As you know, when the General Assembly approved the statewide school funding formula last year, it was set at $8300 per pupil.  The students receiving scholarship assistance through the Scholarship Tax Credit Program would otherwise be in the public school system, so the state saves money by not having to pay for them (or any other of the students enrolled in private schools).  The $1 million tax credit cap, which provides hundreds of scholarships each year, far outweighs what the state would need to pay for these students to be in the public school system (which would be well over $3 million).

In short, the Scholarship Tax Credit Program is a win for everyone involved.  It empowers students and families in need to pursue educational achievement at the school of their choice, and is able to provide fiscal relief to the state at the same time.  Many elected officials went to private schools and choose them for their children; educational freedom should be available to everyone.

For all of these reasons, I ask you to support the Scholarship Tax Credit Program!
